About Graduate and Research Affairs

Graduate and Research Affairs (GRA) is an administrative unit of Academic Affairs. The Vice President for Research (VPR)/Graduate Dean is responsible for university-wide advocacy for research, scholarship and for the development, improvement, and central administration of all post baccalaureate and graduate study at SDSU. The VPR/Graduate Dean reports to the Provost, is a member of the President's Cabinet and the Academic Deans' Council, and provides leadership and coordination of all research and graduate activities at San Diego State University. The VPR/Dean oversees sponsored research activities within the San Diego State University Research Foundation, represents the university externally to major funding agencies, oversees research regulatory committees and provides leadership for all aspects of graduate education.

Within Graduate and Research Affairs an Associate Dean of Graduate Affairs is responsible for graduate student services that include Graduate Admissions, Thesis Review and Graduation Evaluation. The Associate Dean guides and implements graduate education policies as well as assists in graduate program development. Also within Graduate and Research Affairs, is the Division of Research Affairs. The Director of the Division of Research Affairs is responsible for oversight of research assurances, regulatory compliance/integrity, research promotion and intellectual property.

San Diego State University has a highly diverse student population of 33,000 students, including approximately 6,000 graduate students. With 75 masters, 3 masters of fine arts and 16 joint doctoral programs, San Diego State University is identified as a "Research University" by the Carnegie Foundation with a "high activity" designation.
