Research Ethics

Research Ethics Initiatives
New Requirements for RCR Training. Effective January, 2010, NSF will require that institutions applying for NSF funds have a plan in place to provide and document student training in responsible conduct of research (RCR). All students and post doctoral fellows supported by NSF funds must complete RCR training. Research Affairs offers a one-unit Seminar in Research Ethics (INT-S 690) that meets this training requirement and is offered each semester. Other options for research ethics education may be developed to meet the needs of your students. Contact Dena Plemmons for additional information.

Research Ethics over Lunch. Dena Plemmons will meet with students and faculty to discuss ways to introduce discussion of research ethics topics during their lab/center meetings. Contact Dena (594-2309) to schedule for the fall or spring semester.

Ethics Center. SDSU is a partner in the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology. The Ethics Center hosts Exploring Ethics the first Wednesday of each month beginning at 5:30 at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. The event is free and open to the public.

Ethics Education in Science & Engineering. SDSU recently received a $300,000 award from the NSF to develop an ethics education model for three CSU Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree programs, including SDSU’s Computational Sciences PSM program.

University Grants Program – Call for Proposals
The University Grants Program (UGP) is accepting applications for the 2010 funding cycle. The UGP supports scholarly research and creative activities, assists faculty at lower ranks in activities that encourage retention, tenure, and promotion, permits completion of projects, and helps faculty develop a research program competitive for extramural funding.

The maximum award is $10,000. The UGP funding period is 18 months beginning in January. All Unit 3 members are eligible to apply for UGP funding. Join Camille Nebeker at the Faculty/Staff Club on September 23, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. for an overview of the UGP. Register for this event through the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Research Updates

Human Research Protections Update
The SDSU/UCSD cooperative review process for JDP students was successfully implemented last fall. This new process allows one IRB, either UCSD or SDSU, to review on behalf of the other, increasing efficiency and reducing burden for all involved. We are now working with UCSD to expand this agreement to include collaborative faculty projects.

Student Rights and Data Ownership
The senate policy addressing student rights and data ownership was revised effective September 2009. Specifically, a student’s thesis or dissertation used to fulfill the requirements of an advanced degree belongs to the student author. Copyright of this document is secured automatically when the work is created. The university is entitled to a copy or definable facsimile of the thesis or dissertation. The university retains rights to data developed by a student. Any intellectual property developed shall be owned in accordance with Senate policy addressing intellectual property including royalty sharing with the student as appropriate.

Grants and Protocols
Grants or contracts that involve human subjects, animal use or bio hazardous materials must obtain approval from the appropriate compliance committee (e.g., IRB, IACUC, or IBC). Effective August 2009, all submissions to the IRB, IACUC and IBC must include the exact name(s) of grants or contracts covered by the protocol and the narrative portion of the proposal submitted for funding associated with the protocol.

Student Research Conducted in Foreign Countries
Students who travel to a foreign country to attend a professional conference and/or to conduct research are asked to contact the Office of International Programs to ensure they have appropriate insurance and other compliance related documents completed in advance of the travel. Contact OIP at: 594-1354 or via e-mail.
