Graduate Teaching Associate/Graduate Assistant Handbook
San Diego State University takes pride in good teaching and in the academic and professional research that provides support for that teaching. Although the permanent faculty furnishes the primary impetus for the institutional efforts in teaching and research, a select group of graduate students contributes importantly to the success of those efforts.
In recognition of the contribution of these graduate students, the California State University has established the employment categories of Graduate Assistant and Teaching Associate (known more familiarly as GAs and TAs). Students employed as graduate assistants perform such varied duties as reading examination papers, tutoring, student advising, and supporting the research activities of the faculty. Teaching associates have a more specific teaching role in providing direct instruction to undergraduate students, primarily at the lower division level.
GAs and TAs have a singular status in the university. They are first and foremost graduate students pursuing a course of study leading to an advanced degree, and their employment is dependent upon their status as degree-seeking students. Because of this combined role of both student and employee, there exists for GAs and TAs a broad corpus of policies that defines their status: state law, directives of the Chancellor of the California State University and President of San Diego State University, the University Policy File, and the policies of the Graduate Council. The TA/GA Handbook 09-10 is intended to help clarify the duties and responsibilities that the student undertakes in accepting appointment as a GA or TA. Obviously, not every contingency can be addressed here (please read the important note below); thus, students holding these appointments should consult the chairs of their departments or schools for guidance on specific issues that may arise.
San Diego State University is an equal opportunity employer as defined under Title VII and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended. The university does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, marital status, age, or disability. Download the ..
